Cameroonian Opposition Leader Dies in Custody

(MENAFN) Veteran Cameroonian opposition figure Anicet Ekane has passed away while in detention after several weeks of imprisonment following demonstrations over a contentious presidential election, according to his political party and officials.

Ekane, 74, who led the African Movement for New Independence and Democracy (MANIDEM), was taken into custody on October 24 alongside other opposition activists during protests denouncing alleged fraud in the October 12 election that secured 92-year-old President Paul Biya another term.

His lawyer stated that he faced charges of hostility toward the state and incitement of insurrection.

In a statement issued on Monday, MANIDEM reported that Ekane died while being arbitrarily held at the State Secretariat for Defense (SED) in Yaounde, Cameroon’s capital.

The party said he had been “deprived for several days of his oxygen extractor, the medical equipment he needed, as well as access to his pulmonologist.”

The party condemned the circumstances of his death, calling it “a crime of state, the unacceptable treatment inflicted on Anicet Ekane, who had always fought for liberties, social justice, sovereignty and the dignity of the Cameroonian people.”

Augusta Epanya, an executive member of MANIDEM, further described Ekane’s death as “a political assassination.”
